If you’re just joining in now, it’s not too late! You can get the pattern here

IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY CHECKED THE Q&A AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS OR LAST WEEK’S POST PLEASE DO. IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR THOSE DOING THE SAMPLER VERSION THAT THEY ARE USING THE CORRECTED PATTERN. Scroll to the end for more details. I really don’t want anyone wasting time or fabric making up a block that will be smaller than the ones you’ve already made!

So this week you’ll be making Block 3.

For those of you doing the Sampler version, you will be making Block 3: Wonky Star. I used two different green fabrics in mine but it really doesn’t matter how many fabrics you choose or colours you use! I used fabric from the Foundation Range from Windham Fabrics.

If you are making the plain blocks instead, you can go ahead and make another one. Here is one from my plain block version using Michael Miller fabric.

Be sure to post a picture of your block to your Instagram page using the hash tags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns so we can see your fab makes and more importantly for you, so you qualify for entry for this week's prize! Deadline for entries is 8pm (GMT) Thursday 31st January 2019. On Instagram you can ‘follow’ the hashtag. I would encourage you do that so you can meet all the other people joining in and encourage them along and get wonderful inspiration.

Note: your profile settings must be set to public (not private) for everyone to be able to see your posts.  If I can’t see the post then unfortunately you can’t be entered into the prize draw that week!

Week 4 Prize!

The prize this week is from Sew Busy.  Sew Busy is a UK Based fabric shop owned by Nicola Frost. The shop is based in Fleet, Hampshire and is where I used to teach my classes. They stock a wide variety of quilting cottons, an ever growing range of dressmaking fabrics and large selection of haberdashery and sewing themed gifts. I recently interviewed Nicola as part of my British Quilt Industry Series so if you’d like to know more about her then you can read it here.

Nicola has offered a fun fabric bundle and a pack of Bettie Confetti pencils as the prize. The fabric bundle contains three fat quarters, one of which is the Michael Miller comic fabric I used on my plain spools version of this quilt (pictured above) plus two other co-ordinating fabrics. I think the black and white check would be a great binding fabric! The Bettie Confetti pencils have really fun sewing related sayings on the side such as: ‘Itchin’ to be Stitchin’’ and ‘Sexy and I Sew it’ . This one is open for worldwide entries.

Tumbling Spools Quiltalong The Crafty Nomad Week 4 Prize Sew Busy

To be in with a chance to win, make sure to post a picture of Block 3 (plain or sampler) before 8pm (GMT) Thursday 31st January 2019.  Use the hashtags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns and tag me in the post!  If you are making the plain version please be sure to mention somewhere that this is your Block 3.

Looking forward to seeing all the different versions of this popping up on Instagram!

Block 3 has some angled pieces in it which can cause problems so I just wanted to share with you a quick little video that I’ll be putting on social media this week to help with those tricky bits.

Q & A on Pattern Update

Q: How do I know if I have the updated version?

A: The file name on the corrected version ends in ‘Revision 1’ or ‘Rev 1’. If you are using this one then it is correct.

The pattern was updated on the 12th January 2019. If you bought it on the 13th or later you will have the latest version. Those people who bought the pattern before the update, were emailed the updated copy. If you didn’t receive it then please check your junk or spam folder. If still not there then please email me and let me know the email address you used to buy the pattern and I’ll sort it out for you.

Q: I’m making the Sampler version and had already made the first block before I got the update, what do I do?

A: Block 1 and Block 2 in the original file were the correct size, so you are fine! Just use the updated version from now on. Only blocks 3-8 were affected.

Q: I’m making the sampler version and I made all the blocks and now have Block 1 & 2, that are larger than Blocks 3-6. What do I do?

A: You will need to make blocks 3-6 using the updated pattern. Don’t throw away the small ones though, these will be perfect to make other items, such as Mini Mini Quilts, Mug rugs, incorporate them into zip pouches or other fun things you want to sew.

Q: I’m making the plain block version and I already made one (or more) block. Do I switch to the new version?

A: No, not necessarily . If you’ve already started making the plain blocks from the original pattern then I would say stick with it. You will just end up with a slightly smaller quilt that is all. Alternatively, as above, you could use the blocks you’ve already made for other projects and start afresh using the revised pattern.

Q: What pages were altered?

A: Pages 11-16 were changed. An additional sentence was added to Page 5 to give you the finished block size. So you just need to reprint those pages not the whole thing.

Any other questions, please email me, I’m more than happy to help!

There will be a prize assigned to each week of the sewalong.  It will be clearly stated if it is available to be mailed to an international address or just UK postage in the weekly post/email.

In order to be considered for a prize, you'll need to post a picture of that week's completed task to your Instagram page by a certain time/date stated in the weekly post/email.  You'll need to add the hashtags: #tumblingspoolsqal; and #thecraftynomadpatterns, to the text of the post and tag @thecraftynomadfleet in the post.  Make sure your profile is not set to private.  It will need to be set to public so we can all see it.

It is possible to join in on Facebook but you'll need to follow these steps to make sure that we can all see your picture.  When posting, select Public from the drop down box.  Use the hashtags exactly as given above (no capitals or spaces).  And tag @the crafty nomad in the post.

The weekly winner will be announced a few days after the weekly deadline.

It's fine to sew ahead.  If you know you are going to be busy one week and want to sew your blocks ahead of time, that's absolutely fine.  Just remember to be considered for the weekly prize, the posts must be made within the allotted time frame so I can see it when I do my search.

By joining in, you agree that any photos you share using the hashtag may be reposted by me to social media or shared via email to others joining in, or on The Crafty Nomad website.  They will always be attributed to the maker.

In order to get the prize, you will need to supply me with a mailing address.  This information will be treated in the same way as other personal information using my Privacy policy.

In the unlikely event that a prize becomes unavailable then a substitute will be sent instead.
