Week 8 (& 9!): Tumbling Spools Quiltalong

Now the fun really starts!
Hope you’ve had a great week? It’s been school holidays here and I kind of lost track of the days so this post is a little late due to that! In between lazy days and days out with my family and friends I’ve also been working on a secret commission.

So here we are on weeks 8 and 9 of the quiltalong. It’s going so fast! Here are a few of this week's blocks that were shared on Instagram.

Week 8 (& 9!) - Words

So here we are on week 8 of the quiltalong.  As there is quite a lot to do at this stage I'm giving you two weeks to do it all in! By now you should have all your spool blocks made. So you’ll need to sew them together in a column and add the sides and top and bottom to form your quilt top.

Some of you are doing applique words. If you need help on applique there is a basic tutorial on raw edge applique on my blog. The templates are designed for raw edge applique. If you prefer to do needle turn or another technique that requires seam allowance then you will need to add this.

Other people may be challenging themselves to quilt the words. And I really hope some of you do! When I stitch words like this I always sew the outline first using a walking foot. I use the triple stitch to get a nice bold outline, but you could use thicker thread as an alternative. I either trace the words on before basting or, if the fabric is dark, I might choose to trace the words onto tearaway stabiliser and pin this to the quilt sandwich and sew right over the top, tearing it away later.

Either way you may like to add a wavy line of stitching connecting the word to the relevant spool.

Once the outline is complete and any stabiliser removed, I then fill the centre with free motion quilting. The pebble design is a great filler as it is so dense it makes the words pop more. It’s also a very forgiving design! I like to use Rayon thread, particularly is sewing onto a dark background, as this really catches the light and the colours appear bolder than a regular cotton or polyester thread which can look dull against a dark background.

I thought it would be fun to post a little video on this technique. Even if you don’t choose to quilt your words on your actual quilt I would encourage you to have a go at this! In the video I also talk about thread choice.

Week 8-9 Prize!

We have two prizes for this fortnight! One for each week. Share a picture of your progress each week to be in with a chance to win. Maybe even brave posting a little video! The prizes this week are from Search Press. Founded in 1970 by Charlotte de la Bedoyere, Search Press is the leading art and craft publisher in the UK. They specialise in books on knitting, sewing, crocheting, needlecraft, textiles and general crafts.

Search Press have generously supplied not one, but two amazing prizes! The first is the wonderful new book from Jenny K. Lyon called Free Motion Quilting: from Ordinary to Extraordinary. The second is the fun perpetual calendar version of Leah Day’s 365 Quilting Designs. I’ll be doing a couple of book reviews of these two items during the next two weeks on my blog, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

So make sure to post your pictures of your words coming together and completed to be in with a chance.  Due to weight of items, this fortnight’s prizes are open for UK entries only I'm afraid.

Week 8 Prize SP.png

Be sure to post a picture of your words to your Instagram page using the hash tags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns so we can see your fab makes and more importantly for you, so you qualify for entry for this fortnight’s prizes! Deadline for entries is 8pm (GMT) Thursday 28th February 2019. On Instagram you can ‘follow’ the hashtag. I would encourage you do that so you can meet all the other people joining in and encourage them along and get wonderful inspiration.

Note: your profile settings must be set to public (not private) for everyone to be able to see your posts.  If I can’t see the post then unfortunately you can’t be entered into the prize draw that week!

Looking forward to seeing all the different versions of this popping up on Instagram!

Happy Sewing!!

Q & A on Pattern Update

Q: How do I know if I have the updated version?

A: The file name on the corrected version ends in ‘Revision 1’ or ‘Rev 1’. If you are using this one then it is correct.

The pattern was updated on the 12th January 2019. If you bought it on the 13th or later you will have the latest version. Those people who bought the pattern before the update, were emailed the updated copy. If you didn’t receive it then please check your junk or spam folder. If still not there then please email me and let me know the email address you used to buy the pattern and I’ll sort it out for you.

Q: I’m making the Sampler version and had already made the first block before I got the update, what do I do?

A: Block 1 and Block 2 in the original file were the correct size, so you are fine! Just use the updated version from now on. Only blocks 3-8 were affected.

Q: I’m making the sampler version and I made all the blocks and now have Block 1 & 2, that are larger than Blocks 3-6. What do I do?

A: You will need to make blocks 3-6 using the updated pattern. Don’t throw away the small ones though, these will be perfect to make other items, such as Mini Mini Quilts, Mug rugs, incorporate them into zip pouches or other fun things you want to sew.

Q: I’m making the plain block version and I already made one (or more) block. Do I switch to the new version?

A: No, not necessarily . If you’ve already started making the plain blocks from the original pattern then I would say stick with it. You will just end up with a slightly smaller quilt that is all. Alternatively, as above, you could use the blocks you’ve already made for other projects and start afresh using the revised pattern.

Q: What pages were altered?

A: Pages 11-16 were changed. An additional sentence was added to Page 5 to give you the finished block size. So you just need to reprint those pages not the whole thing.

Any other questions, please email me, I’m more than happy to help!

There will be a prize assigned to each week of the sewalong.  It will be clearly stated if it is available to be mailed to an international address or just UK postage in the weekly post/email.

In order to be considered for a prize, you'll need to post a picture of that week's completed task to your Instagram page by a certain time/date stated in the weekly post/email.  You'll need to add the hashtags: #tumblingspoolsqal; and #thecraftynomadpatterns, to the text of the post and tag @thecraftynomadfleet in the post.  Make sure your profile is not set to private.  It will need to be set to public so we can all see it.

It is possible to join in on Facebook but you'll need to follow these steps to make sure that we can all see your picture.  When posting, select Public from the drop down box.  Use the hashtags exactly as given above (no capitals or spaces).  And tag @the crafty nomad in the post.

The weekly winner will be announced a few days after the weekly deadline.

It's fine to sew ahead.  If you know you are going to be busy one week and want to sew your blocks ahead of time, that's absolutely fine.  Just remember to be considered for the weekly prize, the posts must be made within the allotted time frame so I can see it when I do my search.

By joining in, you agree that any photos you share using the hashtag may be reposted by me to social media or shared via email to others joining in, or on The Crafty Nomad website.  They will always be attributed to the maker.

In order to get the prize, you will need to supply me with a mailing address.  This information will be treated in the same way as other personal information using my Privacy policy.

In the unlikely event that a prize becomes unavailable then a substitute will be sent instead.
