Week 10: Tumbling Spools Quiltalong

Finishing Touches!
I can’t believe it we are at the last week already! Don’t know about you, but the last two weeks for me have flown by. I’ve been busy quilting up a secret quilt. So I haven’t had time to review those two books yet! Yikes. And I haven’t been able to do the words on my quilt I was making along with you all! But lots of you have! Let’s have a look at some of them.

Week 10 - The Big Finish

So here we are on week 10 of the quiltalong.  This week you may still be finishing up quilting. And hopefully attaching the binding and displaying proudly in your craft room. I made scrappy binding for my quilt to add an extra bit of colour.

Week 10 Prize!

To celebrate the end of the Quiltalong and to thank you for sticking with it we have two prizes up for grabs this week! To be in with a chance just share a picture of your finished quilt (or at least how far you have gotten with it!) to your Instagram page. The first prize up for grabs this week is from Quilt Now Magazine. One lucky winner will receive a 6 month subscription to the magazine.

Quilt Now is a fabulous UK based quilting magazine. It features patterns that are bright, colourful and contemporary. My original spools quilt, without the added sampler blocks, was featured in Quilt Now a couple of years ago.

And the second prize is from me: The Crafty Nomad. Another person will win 5 patterns of their choice from my website. (International winner will get to choose from my PDF collection only)

Week 10 Prize .png

To be in with a chance of winning one of these two fabulous prizes just share a picture of your quilt (however far you got with it!) to your Instagram page using the hash tags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns ! Deadline for entries is 8pm (GMT) Thursday 14th March 2019. On Instagram you can ‘follow’ the hashtag. I would encourage you do that so you can meet all the other people joining in and encourage them along and get wonderful inspiration.

Note: your profile settings must be set to public (not private) for everyone to be able to see your posts.  If I can’t see the post then unfortunately you can’t be entered into the prize draw that week!

Looking forward to seeing all the different versions of this popping up on Instagram!

Happy Sewing!!

Q & A on Pattern Update

Q: How do I know if I have the updated version?

A: The file name on the corrected version ends in ‘Revision 1’ or ‘Rev 1’. If you are using this one then it is correct.

The pattern was updated on the 12th January 2019. If you bought it on the 13th or later you will have the latest version. Those people who bought the pattern before the update, were emailed the updated copy. If you didn’t receive it then please check your junk or spam folder. If still not there then please email me and let me know the email address you used to buy the pattern and I’ll sort it out for you.

Q: I’m making the Sampler version and had already made the first block before I got the update, what do I do?

A: Block 1 and Block 2 in the original file were the correct size, so you are fine! Just use the updated version from now on. Only blocks 3-8 were affected.

Q: I’m making the sampler version and I made all the blocks and now have Block 1 & 2, that are larger than Blocks 3-6. What do I do?

A: You will need to make blocks 3-6 using the updated pattern. Don’t throw away the small ones though, these will be perfect to make other items, such as Mini Mini Quilts, Mug rugs, incorporate them into zip pouches or other fun things you want to sew.

Q: I’m making the plain block version and I already made one (or more) block. Do I switch to the new version?

A: No, not necessarily . If you’ve already started making the plain blocks from the original pattern then I would say stick with it. You will just end up with a slightly smaller quilt that is all. Alternatively, as above, you could use the blocks you’ve already made for other projects and start afresh using the revised pattern.

Q: What pages were altered?

A: Pages 11-16 were changed. An additional sentence was added to Page 5 to give you the finished block size. So you just need to reprint those pages not the whole thing.

Any other questions, please email me, I’m more than happy to help!

Week 8 (& 9!): Tumbling Spools Quiltalong

Now the fun really starts!
Hope you’ve had a great week? It’s been school holidays here and I kind of lost track of the days so this post is a little late due to that! In between lazy days and days out with my family and friends I’ve also been working on a secret commission.

So here we are on weeks 8 and 9 of the quiltalong. It’s going so fast! Here are a few of this week's blocks that were shared on Instagram.

Prize Winner

The winner of the week 7 prize which was the Rainbow Fat Quarter Bundle of Kona Cotton from Purple Stitches is @Jinkies17. Congratulations!, I’ll be in touch.

Week 8 (& 9!) - Words

So here we are on week 8 of the quiltalong.  As there is quite a lot to do at this stage I'm giving you two weeks to do it all in! By now you should have all your spool blocks made. So you’ll need to sew them together in a column and add the sides and top and bottom to form your quilt top.

Some of you are doing applique words. If you need help on applique there is a basic tutorial on raw edge applique on my blog. The templates are designed for raw edge applique. If you prefer to do needle turn or another technique that requires seam allowance then you will need to add this.

Other people may be challenging themselves to quilt the words. And I really hope some of you do! When I stitch words like this I always sew the outline first using a walking foot. I use the triple stitch to get a nice bold outline, but you could use thicker thread as an alternative. I either trace the words on before basting or, if the fabric is dark, I might choose to trace the words onto tearaway stabiliser and pin this to the quilt sandwich and sew right over the top, tearing it away later.

Either way you may like to add a wavy line of stitching connecting the word to the relevant spool.

Once the outline is complete and any stabiliser removed, I then fill the centre with free motion quilting. The pebble design is a great filler as it is so dense it makes the words pop more. It’s also a very forgiving design! I like to use Rayon thread, particularly is sewing onto a dark background, as this really catches the light and the colours appear bolder than a regular cotton or polyester thread which can look dull against a dark background.

Week 8_ Words TSQAL.png

I thought it would be fun to post a little video on this technique. Even if you don’t choose to quilt your words on your actual quilt I would encourage you to have a go at this! In the video I also talk about thread choice.

Week 8-9 Prize!

We have two prizes for this fortnight! One for each week. Share a picture of your progress each week to be in with a chance to win. Maybe even brave posting a little video! The prizes this week are from Search Press. Founded in 1970 by Charlotte de la Bedoyere, Search Press is the leading art and craft publisher in the UK. They specialise in books on knitting, sewing, crocheting, needlecraft, textiles and general crafts.

Search Press have generously supplied not one, but two amazing prizes! The first is the wonderful new book from Jenny K. Lyon called Free Motion Quilting: from Ordinary to Extraordinary. The second is the fun perpetual calendar version of Leah Day’s 365 Quilting Designs. I’ll be doing a couple of book reviews of these two items during the next two weeks on my blog, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

So make sure to post your pictures of your words coming together and completed to be in with a chance.  Due to weight of items, this fortnight’s prizes are open for UK entries only I'm afraid.

Week 8 Prize SP.png

Be sure to post a picture of your words to your Instagram page using the hash tags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns so we can see your fab makes and more importantly for you, so you qualify for entry for this fortnight’s prizes! Deadline for entries is 8pm (GMT) Thursday 28th February 2019. On Instagram you can ‘follow’ the hashtag. I would encourage you do that so you can meet all the other people joining in and encourage them along and get wonderful inspiration.

Looking forward to seeing all the different versions of this popping up on Instagram!

By the way, I had someone contact me this week as she was having issues with point accuracy on the star block. So if you had a similar experience you might want to read on.

Basically it was an easy fix.  It was due to not trimming the pieces accurately before joining them. Trimming those little bits at the corners really does make a difference.

I put a little video together to show you a couple of tricks for how to get accurate point matching.  Hope it helps. x

Karen has generously supplied a beautiful rainbow Fat Eighth bundle of her screen printed fabrics.  One lucky person will win this bundle.  So make sure to post your picture of your block to be in with a chance.  This one is open for worldwide entries.

Tumbling Spools Quiltalong The Crafty Nomad Week 5 Prize

To be in with a chance to win, make sure to post a picture of Block 4 (plain or sampler) before 8pm (GMT) Thursday 7th February 2019.  Use the hashtags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns and tag me in the post!  If you are making the plain version please be sure to mention somewhere that this is your Block 4.

Looking forward to seeing all the different versions of this popping up on Instagram!

If you are struggling to attach the side triangles accurately, I posted a couple of videos on Instagram this week that you might find useful.

This is for the Tumbling Spools Quiltalong just showing how to add the side triangles to the blocks
This little video shows you how to add them and accurately line them up

If you’re just joining in now, it’s not too late! You can get the pattern here

IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY CHECKED THE Q&A AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS OR LAST WEEK’S POST PLEASE DO. IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR THOSE DOING THE SAMPLER VERSION THAT THEY ARE USING THE CORRECTED PATTERN. Scroll to the end for more details. I really don’t want anyone wasting time or fabric making up a block that will be smaller than the ones you’ve already made!

So this week you’ll be making Block 3.

For those of you doing the Sampler version, you will be making Block 3: Wonky Star. I used two different green fabrics in mine but it really doesn’t matter how many fabrics you choose or colours you use! I used fabric from the Foundation Range from Windham Fabrics.

Tumbling Spools Quiltalong The Crafty Nomad Block 3 Week 4

If you are making the plain blocks instead, you can go ahead and make another one. Here is one from my plain block version using Michael Miller fabric.

Week 4 Prize!

The prize this week is from Sew Busy.  Sew Busy is a UK Based fabric shop owned by Nicola Frost. The shop is based in Fleet, Hampshire and is where I used to teach my classes. They stock a wide variety of quilting cottons, an ever growing range of dressmaking fabrics and large selection of haberdashery and sewing themed gifts. I recently interviewed Nicola as part of my British Quilt Industry Series so if you’d like to know more about her then you can read it here.

Nicola has offered a fun fabric bundle and a pack of Bettie Confetti pencils as the prize. The fabric bundle contains three fat quarters, one of which is the Michael Miller comic fabric I used on my plain spools version of this quilt (pictured above) plus two other co-ordinating fabrics. I think the black and white check would be a great binding fabric! The Bettie Confetti pencils have really fun sewing related sayings on the side such as: ‘Itchin’ to be Stitchin’’ and ‘Sexy and I Sew it’ . This one is open for worldwide entries.

Block 3 has some angled pieces in it which can cause problems so I just wanted to share with you a quick little video that I’ll be putting on social media this week to help with those tricky bits.

So this week you’ll be making Block 2.

Looking forward to seeing all the different versions of this popping up on Instagram!

Just in cased you missed it on social media, I shared a short video last week about how to deal with bright fabric in the seams underneath pale fabric.   Working with a mixture of pale and bright fabrics can be challenging when foundation paper piecing as you may have no choice but to have the seam under the pale fabric.  Here's a simple way to deal with that bright fabric so it doesn't show through!

Tumbling Spools Quiltalong The Crafty Nomad Week 1 Winner

If you’re just joining in now, you can get the pattern here

So this week you’ll be making Block 1.

For those of you doing the Sampler version, you will be making Block 1: Asymmetric Stripes. I used three different orange fabrics in mine but it really doesn’t matter if you do two or more. And of course it doesn’t have to be orange! It can be any colour you like. Make it yours! I used fabric from the Foundation Range from Windham Fabrics.

Tumbling Spools Quiltalong The Crafty Nomad Block 1 Week 2

But you might have chosen to make the plain blocks instead. You might be choosing to showcase your favourite fabrics or fussy cut a fun novelty print into the spool centre. I’ve made one with this fun sewing themed print. If you are making the plain blocks, make sure to remember to make three leaning left and three leaning right over the next 6 weeks, otherwise they won’t tumble!

Week 2 Prize!

The prize this week is from Sulky of America.  Sulky specialise in thread and stabilisers. I LOVE their Rayon thread. It’s what I used on my original version of this quilt. I chose to use Rayon as it really catches the light, much more than regular cotton. So if using that to quilt the words, it will help the words really pop out amazingly!

Sulky are giving one lucky quiltalong participant the chance to win this RAINBOW set of seven 850yd spools of Rayon thread. So this would be great for someone planning to quilt their words. I may even be able to get this to you before your start that part! This one is open for worldwide entries.

Week 1: Tumbling Spools Quiltalong

Im Joining in Are you.png

Yay so exciting! Today is the start of the Tumbling Spools Sampler Quiltalong.

Feel free to share this fun ‘I’m joining in’ image on your social media or blog pages.

If you need a quick reminder of the schedule here it is. It’s basically a block a week, a couple of weeks for the words and a week for finishing off. Should be all done in 10 weeks.

Schedule Tumbling Spools Quiltalong The Crafty Nomad

This first week is all about the planning.  A nice gentle easing in to the quiltalong!

If you haven't managed to get the pattern yet, you can grab a copy here

Decide if you are going to make the sampler blocks or just six plain spool blocks.  Things to consider here are: how confident you are with foundation paper piecing; do you want to showcase a fabric; or do you want to challenge yourself with the sampler blocks.  The plain blocks are obviously easier as less pieces to piece!

Decide if you are going to applique the words or quilt them in place.

What fabric are you planning to use?  If you are doing the sampler version then blenders, solids or small prints will work well.  If you are opting for the plain block version, then choosing a fabric that has novelty print can work well if the size is right to position it in the centre of the spool.

Be sure to post a picture of your fabric pull and front page of the pattern to your Instagram page using the hash tags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns so we can see your fab makes and more importantly for you, so you qualify for entry for this week's prize!

Note: your profile settings must be set to public (not private) for everyone to be able to see your posts.  If I can’t see the post then unfortunately you can’t be entered into the prize draw that week!

Here is my fabric pull.  I'm making up the sampler version using Foundation Fabric by Shayla Wolf of Sassafras Lane for Windham Fabrics.  I will make up some of the plain blocks as well during the 10 weeks to make up as mini mini quilts or mug rugs.  For those I'll use some other novelty fabrics.

Week 1 Fabric Pull tumbling spools quiltalong the crafty nomad

Week 1 Prize!

There will be a different prize on offer each week (rules below). The prize this week is from Sarah Ashford Studio.  Sarah is a quilter and pattern designer.  I recently got to interview her and you can read more about that on this blog post. Sarah makes and sells these fun project pouches to keep all your bits and pieces together for one project.  We thought it would be great to have one especially for your Tumbling Spools Quiltalong! So one lucky participant will get to win one!

To be in with a chance to win, make sure to post a picture of your fabric pull and front cover of the pattern.  Let us know in the post if you are planning to do the sampler or the plain version, the applique or the quilted words.  Use the hashtags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns and tag me in the post!  This one is open for worldwide entries!

If you don't win but want to keep all your blocks in one just like this then just contact Sarah, I'm sure she'd make up some more like this one!

Tumbling Spools Sampler Mini Quilt Pattern

A couple of years ago I made my Tumbling Spools quilt for Quilt Now magazine. I knew I wanted to release it as a pattern as there was a lot of interest in it. But I decided I wanted to redesign it before releasing it as a pattern. I wanted it to be smaller so it would be perfect for most people’s craft rooms. I also wanted to make it a bit more interesting!!

So, say hello to the Tumbling Spools Sampler Mini Quilt.

A stack of spools on the left that look like they are about to come tumbling down and some Quilty words on the right.

The quilt finishes up at about 22x32 inches.

I’ve made the centres of the spools into sampler blocks so each one is different. You can choose to make up the six different sampler blocks if you like. But there are also patterns where the centres are plain so you can fussy cut your favourite fabrics instead.

When it comes to the words you also have a couple of options too. Quilt them in place. Or appliqué them! Templates and instructions for both.

The really exciting thing about this quilt for me is that this one is going to be at Quilt Market and Quilt Festival in Houston this week!! So if you are going and want to see it in the flesh then head on over to the Sulky of America booth.

I’ve used Sulky 40wt. Rayon threads as they are perfect for the quilting as they really catch the light and stand out so well. In the UK these are sold under license by Gutermann and also I think directly from Sulky.

The pattern is available as an immediate download PDF on my website. So you can print at home and get started straight away!

You might also be interested to know that I’m hosting a Quiltalong for this mini quilt in January! Plenty of AMAZING prizes from AMAZING sponsors!! And plenty of time to get the pattern and gather your supplies! You can sign up to a Quiltalong Newsletter so you don’t miss a thing!
