Ombre Improv Curves Mini Quilt

So I’ve shared some of these pictures on social media but decided it deserved it’s own post!

The Crafty Nomad Ombre Improv Curves Mini Quilt

About a month ago I went on the Purple Stitches quilting retreat. I had a great time. Whilst there I took a class with Nick Ball from Quilts from the Attic. I have to say, I totally wasn’t going to do this class initially. It was all about Improv quilting. Those that know me will know that I like things ‘just so’ and until taking the class I had thought ‘Improv’ was synonymous with ‘slap dash’. Not so people, not so! I am so glad I changed my mind and did the class. I LOVED THE CLASS!!

Nick is running the class at Purple Stitches in May this year if you are interested. You can get all the details here.

The class covered a couple of different techniques. The one that I was really interested in was the improv curves. I had bought half a metre of a Timeless Treasure Studio Ombre fabric in Peacock from Lady Sew and Sew and decided to use it to make this little ombre square during the class.

Ombre Improv Curves Block The Crafty Nomad

I bordered it with some white Kona fabric. Then set about thinking how to quilt it. I knew I wanted to quilt wavy lines in in a variety of blue/teals. So i consulted my Sulky Rayon colour card and chose some matching colours. Sulky generously supplied the thread for me to use for this project. I totally love quilting with Sulky Rayon as the thread really catches the light. I also added in some Sulky Cotton 12wt into the mix to add texture.

Sulky Rayon Threads #SewBetterwithSulky

In the end I decided to quilt wavy lines in colours corresponding to the fabric, but extend past the square to make the square sit in a circle shape. Around the outside of the circle I decided to quilt with white and do a variety of free motion motifs. I love practising my free motion. Although I’m looking at the finished thing and although I love it I’m wondering if I should have stuck to straight lines to really keep with the modern aesthetic?? Maybe next time. I am planning on making a bigger version soon with a slight variation.

I decided not to bind it. Instead, I added a facing. First time for me doing that. I followed Jenny Haynes’ (Papper Sax Sten) tutorial. I really quite like the look of it. Was a bit fiddly getting a nice mitred corner though!

The light was a bit weird when I took some of these photos, it looks like it’s glowing!

Here are some close ups of the free motion designs

I wanted to get a shot of the thicker cotton threads next to the thinner rayon ones, but my photography skills are limited! You can just about pick the thicker threads out in the white section below.

What threads do you quilt with? Have you tried Rayon? Do you mix up the weights?

Week 10: Tumbling Spools Quiltalong

Finishing Touches!
I can’t believe it we are at the last week already! Don’t know about you, but the last two weeks for me have flown by. I’ve been busy quilting up a secret quilt. So I haven’t had time to review those two books yet! Yikes. And I haven’t been able to do the words on my quilt I was making along with you all! But lots of you have! Let’s have a look at some of them.

Week 10 - The Big Finish

So here we are on week 10 of the quiltalong.  This week you may still be finishing up quilting. And hopefully attaching the binding and displaying proudly in your craft room. I made scrappy binding for my quilt to add an extra bit of colour.

Week 8_ Words TSQAL.png

Week 10 Prize!

To celebrate the end of the Quiltalong and to thank you for sticking with it we have two prizes up for grabs this week! To be in with a chance just share a picture of your finished quilt (or at least how far you have gotten with it!) to your Instagram page. The first prize up for grabs this week is from Quilt Now Magazine. One lucky winner will receive a 6 month subscription to the magazine.

Quilt Now is a fabulous UK based quilting magazine. It features patterns that are bright, colourful and contemporary. My original spools quilt, without the added sampler blocks, was featured in Quilt Now a couple of years ago.

And the second prize is from me: The Crafty Nomad. Another person will win 5 patterns of their choice from my website. (International winner will get to choose from my PDF collection only)

Week 10 Prize .png

To be in with a chance of winning one of these two fabulous prizes just share a picture of your quilt (however far you got with it!) to your Instagram page using the hash tags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns ! Deadline for entries is 8pm (GMT) Thursday 14th March 2019. On Instagram you can ‘follow’ the hashtag. I would encourage you do that so you can meet all the other people joining in and encourage them along and get wonderful inspiration.

Note: your profile settings must be set to public (not private) for everyone to be able to see your posts.  If I can’t see the post then unfortunately you can’t be entered into the prize draw that week!

Looking forward to seeing all the different versions of this popping up on Instagram!

Q & A on Pattern Update

Q: How do I know if I have the updated version?

A: The file name on the corrected version ends in ‘Revision 1’ or ‘Rev 1’. If you are using this one then it is correct.

The pattern was updated on the 12th January 2019. If you bought it on the 13th or later you will have the latest version. Those people who bought the pattern before the update, were emailed the updated copy. If you didn’t receive it then please check your junk or spam folder. If still not there then please email me and let me know the email address you used to buy the pattern and I’ll sort it out for you.

Q: I’m making the Sampler version and had already made the first block before I got the update, what do I do?

A: Block 1 and Block 2 in the original file were the correct size, so you are fine! Just use the updated version from now on. Only blocks 3-8 were affected.

Q: I’m making the sampler version and I made all the blocks and now have Block 1 & 2, that are larger than Blocks 3-6. What do I do?

A: You will need to make blocks 3-6 using the updated pattern. Don’t throw away the small ones though, these will be perfect to make other items, such as Mini Mini Quilts, Mug rugs, incorporate them into zip pouches or other fun things you want to sew.

Q: I’m making the plain block version and I already made one (or more) block. Do I switch to the new version?

A: No, not necessarily . If you’ve already started making the plain blocks from the original pattern then I would say stick with it. You will just end up with a slightly smaller quilt that is all. Alternatively, as above, you could use the blocks you’ve already made for other projects and start afresh using the revised pattern.

Q: What pages were altered?

A: Pages 11-16 were changed. An additional sentence was added to Page 5 to give you the finished block size. So you just need to reprint those pages not the whole thing.

Any other questions, please email me, I’m more than happy to help!

Break out the Bunting Quilt

Thought I’d pop on here and show you my latest quilt (& cushion!).

I’ve called it 'Break out the Bunting', because it was inspired by outdoor garden parties with bunting fluttering in the warm breeze.  It plays with the humble corner block, using two different sizes of corner that cleverly fit together when rotated to create lines of triangles that look like bunting.

Break out the Bunting Quilt Pattern The Crafty Nomad

It was a great scrap buster, I think I must have used every single bright fabric I have in my stash! I used Kona white for the background on the quilt. I quilted the quilt with an all over free motion meander design.

Break out the bunting quilt pattern The Crafty Nomad

I made a matching cushion too. But for this one I used low volume prints for the background instead of the solid white fabric. And did straight line quilting for a more modern look. Not sure which I prefer! What’s your favourite?

Break out the Bunting Cushion Pattern The Crafty Nomad

I’ve written this up as a pattern which is available to buy here. When I was designing this one I played with lots of different layouts of the blocks, so I included all of those other layout ideas in the pattern too. Two of my lovely pattern testers, Martine and Abigail opted to make up some of the alternative designs.

Martine made this wonderful Ombre version.

And Abigail made this striking version of the Radiating Squares idea.

Week 8 (& 9!): Tumbling Spools Quiltalong

Now the fun really starts!
Hope you’ve had a great week? It’s been school holidays here and I kind of lost track of the days so this post is a little late due to that! In between lazy days and days out with my family and friends I’ve also been working on a secret commission.

So here we are on weeks 8 and 9 of the quiltalong. It’s going so fast! Here are a few of this week's blocks that were shared on Instagram.

The winner of the week 7 prize which was the Rainbow Fat Quarter Bundle of Kona Cotton from Purple Stitches is @Jinkies17. Congratulations!, I’ll be in touch.

Week 8 (& 9!) - Words

So here we are on week 8 of the quiltalong.  As there is quite a lot to do at this stage I'm giving you two weeks to do it all in! By now you should have all your spool blocks made. So you’ll need to sew them together in a column and add the sides and top and bottom to form your quilt top.

Some of you are doing applique words. If you need help on applique there is a basic tutorial on raw edge applique on my blog. The templates are designed for raw edge applique. If you prefer to do needle turn or another technique that requires seam allowance then you will need to add this.

Other people may be challenging themselves to quilt the words. And I really hope some of you do! When I stitch words like this I always sew the outline first using a walking foot. I use the triple stitch to get a nice bold outline, but you could use thicker thread as an alternative. I either trace the words on before basting or, if the fabric is dark, I might choose to trace the words onto tearaway stabiliser and pin this to the quilt sandwich and sew right over the top, tearing it away later.

Either way you may like to add a wavy line of stitching connecting the word to the relevant spool.

Once the outline is complete and any stabiliser removed, I then fill the centre with free motion quilting. The pebble design is a great filler as it is so dense it makes the words pop more. It’s also a very forgiving design! I like to use Rayon thread, particularly is sewing onto a dark background, as this really catches the light and the colours appear bolder than a regular cotton or polyester thread which can look dull against a dark background.

Week 8_ Words TSQAL.png

I thought it would be fun to post a little video on this technique. Even if you don’t choose to quilt your words on your actual quilt I would encourage you to have a go at this! In the video I also talk about thread choice.

Week 8-9 Prize!

We have two prizes for this fortnight! One for each week. Share a picture of your progress each week to be in with a chance to win. Maybe even brave posting a little video! The prizes this week are from Search Press. Founded in 1970 by Charlotte de la Bedoyere, Search Press is the leading art and craft publisher in the UK. They specialise in books on knitting, sewing, crocheting, needlecraft, textiles and general crafts.

Search Press have generously supplied not one, but two amazing prizes! The first is the wonderful new book from Jenny K. Lyon called Free Motion Quilting: from Ordinary to Extraordinary. The second is the fun perpetual calendar version of Leah Day’s 365 Quilting Designs. I’ll be doing a couple of book reviews of these two items during the next two weeks on my blog, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

So make sure to post your pictures of your words coming together and completed to be in with a chance.  Due to weight of items, this fortnight’s prizes are open for UK entries only I'm afraid.

Be sure to post a picture of your words to your Instagram page using the hash tags #tumblingspoolsqal and #thecraftynomadpatterns so we can see your fab makes and more importantly for you, so you qualify for entry for this fortnight’s prizes! Looking forward to seeing all the different versions of this popping up on Instagram!

By the way, I had someone contact me this week as she was having issues with point accuracy on the star block. So if you had a similar experience you might want to read on.

Basically it was an easy fix.  It was due to not trimming the pieces accurately before joining them. Trimming those little bits at the corners really does make a difference.

I put a little video together to show you a couple of tricks for how to get accurate point matching.  Hope it helps. x

Rules!

There will be a prize assigned to each week of the sewalong.  It will be clearly stated if it is available to be mailed to an international address or just UK postage in the weekly post/email.

In order to be considered for a prize, you'll need to post a picture of that week's completed task to your Instagram page by a certain time/date stated in the weekly post/email.  You'll need to add the hashtags: #tumblingspoolsqal; and #thecraftynomadpatterns, to the text of the post and tag @thecraftynomadfleet in the post.  Make sure your profile is not set to private.  It will need to be set to public so we can all see it.

It is possible to join in on Facebook but you'll need to follow these steps to make sure that we can all see your picture.  When posting, select Public from the drop down box.  Use the hashtags exactly as given above (no capitals or spaces).  And tag @the crafty nomad in the post.

The weekly winner will be announced a few days after the weekly deadline.

It's fine to sew ahead.  If you know you are going to be busy one week and want to sew your blocks ahead of time, that's absolutely fine.  Just remember to be considered for the weekly prize, the posts must be made within the allotted time frame so I can see it when I do my search.

By joining in, you agree that any photos you share using the hashtag may be reposted by me to social media or shared via email to others joining in, or on The Crafty Nomad website.  They will always be attributed to the maker.

In order to get the prize, you will need to supply me with a mailing address.  This information will be treated in the same way as other personal information using my Privacy policy.

In the unlikely event that a prize becomes unavailable then a substitute will be sent instead.

As per Instagram rules, this promotion is in no way sponsored, administered, or associated with Instagram, Inc. By entering, entrants confirm that they are 13+ years of age, release Instagram of responsibility, and agree to Instagram’s terms of use.

Before we get onto this week's block, I'm sure you'd all like to know who is the Winner of the Week 4 Prize. So without further ado the winner of the Fabric Bundle and fun sewing themed pencils from Sew Busy is @charlotterose_29! I’ll be in touch.

If you’re just joining in now, it’s not too late! You can get the pattern here

So this week you’ll be making Block 4.

For those of you doing the Sampler version, you will be making Block 4: Rope Twist. Ideally you’ll need three different blue fabrics. The more contrast the better. If you are making the plain blocks instead, you can go ahead and make another one.
.
Just a quick reminder to check that all your blocks are finishing up at the same size.

If you are struggling to attach the side triangles accurately, I posted a couple of videos on Instagram this week that you might find useful.

This is for the Tumbling Spools Quiltalong just showing how to add the side triangles to the blocks
This little video shows you how to add them and accurately line them up

Q & A on Pattern Update

Q: How do I know if I have the updated version?

A: The file name on the corrected version ends in ‘Revision 1’ or ‘Rev 1’. If you are using this one then it is correct.

The pattern was updated on the 12th January 2019. If you bought it on the 13th or later you will have the latest version. Those people who bought the pattern before the update, were emailed the updated copy. If you didn’t receive it then please check your junk or spam folder. If still not there then please email me and let me know the email address you used to buy the pattern and I’ll sort it out for you.
